Exams are over now :)

My amma was working.  She just couldn’t change her schedule to meet mine. So much of commitments tied her down.

Appa was busy too – his work and his passion for music to run a successful Sabha kept him running short of time.

My patti and thatha went on with their usual things.

There was no seriousness in the house, that I was writing my Board exams. The TV was ON, as usual, LOUD – as the NEWS was the most important program to watch. The Radio was ON, as usual, as everyone loved the songs that were being played.

Guests keep visiting during weekends, as my amma will be home to cook for all of them.

The household functioned as normal as possible, when I had to write my board exams. And I did write…passed with flying colors too 🙂

So much has changed now, with the growing number of distractions to cloud the young minds, who need to focus on their studies.

First of all, as a mother of two girls who went through their board exams, I shut off myself from the online world, as my logging in to my accounts was a sure way to distraction for them. These days, kids are distracted so easily and their focus stays for just a short span of time.

Only the NEWS and Sports channels were ON, on TV. Probably the Food shows also were given an OK. But movies, serials and songs which form the major part of the entertainment is proven to be totally hazardous to the studious mind.

Encouraging the girls to take up walking, swimming, playing and things like that, for a break between studies proved to be a great stress buster.

As a parent, I needed to put in some effort, in the form of support system. I didn’t teach my girls anything from their school books or asked them questions like “Did you read this or that”. It was my presence with them, to show “I am with them during this stressful time of their school life” that made a difference.  I am happy I did it and now those stressful times are over and we can look ahead to fun filled holidays. And hopefully I can stay online for more time duration.

So, how have you been doing ???

  1. Ah!! I remember that when my boards were about to begin the cable culture had just started. All other parents refraiend from getting it activated but not my Mom!! She was very clear, we shud study in all circumstances 😀 Needless to say, passed with flying colors 😉

    1. Yeah…times have indeed changed !!!
Also we need to stress on the importance of focus and priority towards learning and working towards the goal or ambition, as the distractions might take over that.

  2. great job done uma! this kind of support means a lot to them. i have seen mothers asking questions from text books even while they were eating during exam days. imagine the child’s pathetic condition. will they eat or answer? and how long will they do this?

    1. Absolutely Dhana…made a lot of difference. Its better to make the child more curious about things around so the learning happens naturally 🙂

Its certainly not a joke…even if we dont want to get over excited or pressurized, the peers and the school make up for it…

Yeah, the pressures are so high among peers in school and tuitions, its difficult not to follow suit.

  4. Hey, good to see you back Uma! Was wondering why you were away..
So agree.. its difficult to keep them from distractions without us giving up TV and online time..
Kudos to you! Am sure your girls know how lucky they are 🙂
Loved the contrast you’ve portrayed here 🙂

    1. Thanks Priya…yes, the distractions being many, not just the TV, is quite difficult to handle, esp if the kids are playful. Thank God, I am lucky to have girls who can listen to the reasoning I make to them, to avoid these distractions.

  5. I was so bad during my boards. I knew I would not study if Mom left the house, which meant I did not let her step out for more that half an hour while I was home. Bad bad kid me. I am glad your girls did well. 🙂
