Walking blah blah…

My recent status msg was this : “Love the time, when my shadows are the longest !!!”

Does it tell you anything about what I am doing ????

Oh yeah, I started a teeny-weeny bit of walking in the early morning hours, when Chennai is quite pleasant and fools you with the climate.  It’s all the effects of those rants – I hope u remember them, for I am trying to forget them all.

And it was also suggested that walking is one the best exercise to maintain the diastolic blood pressure, near normal ranges.

I knew all these, but was procrastinating the idea of walking. I give myself various reasons for skipping the walking – My heel is hurting – Not enough sleep in the night and hence tired – I wanna sleep late in the morning – I am hungry, so I can’t walk !!!  Not valid ones, I know, but I justified with all the legality I had in me.

It was my daughter, who literally pushed me out of the cozy comforts of my bed into my hard walking shoes. Naaaa, I didn’t like it at all – but those words about my negligence on maintaining my health was quite a strong one, which I cannot choose to ignore. What to do ???? She does talks sense….Dont u think she has taken after me ???? 😉 😉

On a serious note, that really got me going and I pulled myself for a walking session everyday morning. But I made sure that I stick to that 30 mins of walking – Why, everyone says 30 mins everyday is more than enough ???

Now, that its going on for a few days, I’ve pretty much got into a routine, I just feel. And I hope I’ll continue this…..not blah blah, but walking. 🙂

Among the morning walkers, I find a lot of elderly men, who have suddenly realized the need to exercise, post-retirement stage.  And their wives are dragged into this morning routine too. I find these women are immensely happy to share some time with their husbands, during these morning walks.  But there’s something that’s drastically contradicting. The men look like the better attired ones, in Shorts / Track Pants, Bright Tees, Designer Walking shoes and socks.  The women, on the other hand,  are dressed in a really dull sari or a salwar kameez with a dupatta pinned up so well that it resembles a sari sometimes.  And the other thing which I noticed was, the women wore ordinary chappals – the one u use for home wear or probably a little bit better one, but that has seen the best times and begging to retire.

Did u get my point ????

Why this contrasting dress code ????

Do the husbands don’t want their wives to be better dressed or what ??? Or does the women think that this dressing is enough to walk with this man ????

Why cant the women wear walking shoes ????

And I am watching everyday, how uncomfortable it is for the lady to walk up to that speed of her man, clad in a sari – trying to adjust the pallu or holding up the fall of the sari, in the front. Surely, it looks like the dress is very discomforting to her.

Also, there are other kind of elderly men, who are sly from the top to bottom. Oh, how I hate them !!! Their main purpose of choosing the walking routine, is to look around to see the other ladies who come for walk.  If none turns up on any particular day, these men are not disappointed either – they wait to see the mommies coming down to drop their kids in the school bus. Oh, what life these men lead….disgusting.

And I love to watch a group of ladies and men, playing badminton – which is just great. How sports can bond people together !!!

There are a few people, who sit on the sides, facing east, waiting for the Sun to rise. And I thought I was the one, obsessed with the Sunrise. 😉  These people, start their Pranayama exercises, facing the early morning sun – which is so good for health.  I should be taking inspiration from them. 🙂

So, continues my walking…..which is providing content for my blog…..I’ve no better reason to stop walking right now….Isn’t it ????

Here’s another pic from my Sun Collection !!! 🙂

Ain't it pretty ???? That cloud line over the sun, makes it more beautiful. 🙂

Walking in a sari? I mean walking walking? Sounds like an ordeal!

I love morning walks. There isn’t a better time to freshen up the mind.

    and jasmine mornings
    and He rises
    majestic
    amidst clouds

    Its becoming a game
    of
    What
    He will see today,
    as He blows aside
    a truant cloud.

    Will it be
    leaders in
    wheelchairs
    and
    goggles
    scheming,
    making people vanish
    like in movies ?

    Will it be
    11 guys
    running
    behind a ball
    whacked
    way beyond the green
    and two guys
    looking at a third
    holding his finger
    up ?

    Will it be
    small children
    lugging
    huge schoolbags
    to school,
    running to
    catch a bus ?

    Will it be
    a
    freshly bathed Amma
    worshipping
    His arrival
    with
    an intricate rangoli
    at the door ?

    He watches
    the young lady
    striding
    amidst
    the modern Appas
    and
    traditional Ammas,
    thinking
    of what
    she needs to
    make for lunch.

    Then the lady turns
    and
    quickly clicks
    His photo;

    Abashed
    at
    getting carried away,
    he shoves
    all those clouds aside,
    takes a windy breath
    and decides to
    get to work.

    A long long climb
    till lunchtime…..

  4. If you go for a walk wearing a saree, the petticoat sticks to the legs because of the sweat and it is very difficult to put the leg forward.

I too have noticed all the sceneries you have mentioned here. We are morning walkers for many years now! I wear a dupatta but don’t pin it and wear sports shoes too!

The picture is beautiful and the poet is here to give a beautiful tribute too! Love Suranga’s poems!

    Keep walking, Uma!

    1. Oh yeah, the petticoats do stick….I think thats why the filmy ladies, wear tight skinny pants beneath the sari….so that it’ll be easy to dance in the rain too… 😉 😉

Thanks Sandhya….I am holding on to that routine with all that I can. 🙂 🙂

  6. I have a answer to that , Recently I asked a friend the same question while we were walking up and down oxford street.. That why dont you lovely ladies wear Walking shoes, the answer was No ladies dont wear shoes .. I dont know why.. some sort of fashion statement to wear high heels or slippers ..

But you started to walk EXCELLENT.. and keep it up … and there is no reason to stop ever…

    and beautiful picture…

    1. Oh No !!! Bikram, I dont agree to that….heels or slippers are not meant for walking as a exercise and I am wondering what kind of woman will wear heels for walking like that ??? The heels in her body will kick her….. 😉

And I intend to continue well too….so, thanks. 🙂

  7. Now getting fodder for new posts on your blog should be the added temptation to keep up with this new-found great habit of a morning walk 😛

I agree with you on the idea that be it men or women all should put on appropriate exercise gear (including shoes) to be able to exercise the right way 😛

As far 30 minutes…well the benefits of any exercise begin at the 30th minute, so make sure you always exercise for 40-45 minutes to seek desired benefits from the routine (including pictures to post 😉 )
Love your Sun and cloud collection 😀 😀

    1. Absolutely….isnt getting fodder for post more important ???? 😉

  8. Inspiring morning post Uma 🙂 🙂 Now I go for driving classes in the morning and have come to enjoy the short morning walk.

Best of luck with your walking . And about the dress code , I have also noticed the same . Men even if they go for walking for one day , first buy their gear !!!

Nice pic of sun . 🙂 🙂 Sun pics are my favourite too 🙂

And your comment on exam tension brought me back to earth . I was really very tensed you know .

    Like

    1. That reminds me…..I too need to take those driving classes….hubby is insisting that I attend them….. 😉

See, everyone of us have noticed that – the men in good exercise gear and the women dont bother with those things….

No probs….I’ve been there….exam tensions are not worth it at all….just enjoy your time with your children and make sure they learn things happily. 🙂 🙂

I am surprised about the women’s dress code… because, here in Jaipur and even in Jammu, Lucknow, Jodhpur, have always seen elderly women wearing sports shoes with suits (and sarees)!!

    Nice capture, yet again!! 🙂

  10. I have noticed this incongruity between the way men and women dress for their walks. Rather it makes me angry for some reason because I feel some of these men are real proud to keep up with the times, wear colorful tees and walking shoes. But how is it that they don’t seem to feel the need for the same for their spouses as well??
Do enjoy your walking and write more of what you see. I sure enjoyed reading this one 🙂

  14. I am one of those morning walkers and I walk for almost an hour daily for the past like 12 years?? 🙄

Haa what fun it is to notice people during a walk. I used to love that when I was in India. The milkman, newspaper wala’s, vegetable vendors etc etc. Unfortunately, all I get to see here is people taking their pets out to make them do potty 😥

  15. OMG that sun pic is divine!!!! As for walking, great job uma, I wish i could muster the will power you have 🙂 About the way the women dress, I really think they need to change their mindset. I know many couples where the man encourages his wife to dress in western outfit that is more suitable but the wife refuses to adapt. And the men who leer and ogle..may they rot in their graves!!!

And now for the difference in attire.. Chappals are inexcusable… but yeah, my mom is an avid morning walker. She wears her sparkling sneakers… but will always walk in Salwaar Kameez or Sari (not as much now though)> Even when she visits us here, same thing> i ask her why: “She is like… I am just more comfortable in S. Kameez in public.
But I am with you- As women, we need to take care of ourselves…. and then we will feel better and more confident and the better half’s better recognise this!
