Healthy breakfast

I always crib about Monday Morning blues….but today was different. Dont know why or what gave me the feeling of goodness !!!! Is it because the girls have holidays and there is no need to pack lunch ???? 😉

Either way, I was in a good mood when I started the day. So, here’s some sweet breakfast, which made it all the more a wonderful day to begin. 🙂

The day began with Finger Millet for us. 🙂 🙂  Called Kezhwaragu ( கேழ்வரகு) here, its one good source of Iron and Calcium.

கேழ்வரகு வெல்ல அடை (Ragi Jaggery Pancake)

Measure 3 cups of water and bring it to boil, in a wide pan. Now add to it, 2 cups of grated jaggery. Let the jaggery melt. Switch off the heat and filter the jaggery water to remove impurities. Now keep the filtered jaggery water again on heat and bring it to a boil.

Boil Jaggery in Water

Add cardamom powder to it. When its just begins to boil, add 1.5 cups of Ragi flour and 0.5 cups of Wheat flour to it.

Ragi flour + Wheat Flour

Mix well to make it look like this.

Ragi + Wheat flour mixed in Jaggery

Now, make them into small balls and flatten it on a greased plastic sheet. Using ghee is the best option….just use a little, for the taste. 🙂 😛

Now, cook on the tawa on low heat and dont blacken it too much…Use ghee on both sides while cooking….

Cook it on a tava on low heat. Apply little ghee on both sides.

Now, the yummy Ragi Vella Adai is ready to gobble…of course, we finished eating all of them. 😛 😛 😛  Have them plain…its damn good. Or u can have it with coriander / pudina chutney or pickle. Enjoy it…however u want. 🙂

Yummy, healthy breakfast.

Its a fav at home and we three girls, hog on this very often. I actually refrigerate the extra dough and keep using it from time to time.

Its yummy, healthy, tasty, so good for health…..so what are u waiting for ???? Come on, do it, eat it and be fit. 🙂 😛 😛

Edited to add :

Spicy version of Kezhvaragu adai (as per CelestialRays’ request)

Take a cup of Ragi flour, add to it finely cut green chillies and finely cut onions. Add salt and a tablespoon of curd. Mix well. If required add a little water. Make into balls and flatten it and cook on tawa. Its super awesome with coriander chutney. 🙂 And of course, milagai podi is a damn good combo too !!! 🙂 😛

  1. Why do you do this to me Uma! Here I am cursing the universe for bringing in the concept of Monday morning after getting up late, missing breakfast, managing to get to work barely on time and now I am starved but only want to eat this 😦
Not the friendly egg and Mayo sandwich that is available next door!

Ps: does this ragi adai have a savoury/spicy version as well?

    1. So, u are trying the spicier version huh ???? Go on…I am waiting for ur review. 🙂

U know, I hate cornflakes, mainly becos I cant drink plain milk…. 😉 And I cant eat plain bread and butter / jam….A sandwich is fine and not so fond of. So, I try to make diff things for breakfast….and this is one such recipe. 🙂

  3. We make the spicier version. Same as our ragi rotti, only diff being we pat in directly on the tawa. Never made the sweet version. Wil ask the sweet tooth @ home whether he wants it 😉 😉

    1. He is the sweet tooth ???? LOL !!! Then he’ll surely like it. 🙂 My amma always makes this during Karthigai deepam. But since here at MIL’s place, there is no such thing, I do it whenever the sweet tooth demands it. 🙂 🙂 Made the spicy one for S, yday night….he fell in love with it. 🙂 😛

RAGI is my favourite. God I had stuffed so much of that thing into Samy’s body when he was a kid 😛 I am definitely gonna make your sweet version for my evening snack and the spicy version for saturday breakfast.

PS: Nu and me will definitely REPORT back to you Chef-in-Commander
