Pl name your child, now !!!

Reading posts by Meira and Swaram, on how eager they are to get an email Id for their child, just shows the enthusiasm these girls show in everything in life.ย  Here are people on one side, who wants the right name for the email ID of their child, who is yet to be born. ๐Ÿ˜†

Now, here I was, witnessing the other side of the coin, in my neighbour.ย  The contrast of the two situations just stumped me, that I’ve to write about it.

This lady Mrs S, looks very sweet, has a smile on her face for everybody.ย  So, when she first shifted to our apartment, we met casually at the children’s play area.ย  Each one of us, were telling about ourselves, kids and stuff like that.

OK !!! Here’s how the conversation went….

Mrs S, has two daughters.ย  Very good.

Elder one is studying in Class 5. WOW !!! Gud !!!

Her name is Devi…….ย  Curiously, What does it mean ????

Oh !!! Its the name of Goddess Durga !!ย ย  Very good.

My second daughter is 2 years old. OH !!!

We call her Chun-Chun.ย  Chun-Chun ???? ๐Ÿ™„ Is that her name ???

No, its her pet name.ย We’ve not yet decided, on her name.ย  ๐Ÿ™„ย ย

We want some traditional name like how we have named our elder daughter. We’re searching for a good name for my second daughter, too. If you get to know any good names, please tell me, OK ????ย ย  Somebody hold me, I am fainting…

Its been 8 months since they moved in here, and still we have only this dialogue between us – Did you find a good name ????

Oh !!! Come on !!!! What am I ??? A mobile baby-names dictionary ????ย  ๐Ÿ™„

ย

After listening to my neighbour’s episode on naming her second daughter, I am reminded of the book, Jhumpa Lahiri’s NAMESAKE !!!!ย

How those two would name their son as Gogol (pet name), and wait for a letter from their grandmother, who decides everybody’s name in their family. But, before the letter arrives, the grandmother dies.ย  Now, they are helpless, as they dont have the letter which has the name of the child. But they are forced to make a passport for the child, so that they can travel to India to attend the rites of the grandmother. And so, that boy is stuck with the name, Gogol.ย  He finally puts up an Ad in the paper, to change his name legally, when he becomes 18. What a story on names !!!!! ๐Ÿ˜†

  2. Ha..ha..ha..

Ummu, when I was in school I had 1 set name for boy and girl for 3 religions and mom asked why do I have names like Emily-Eric (Christian names), Rehana-Rizwan (Muslim names) so on. I told her that who knows with whom I will end up so just preparing the list. Mom was laughing so hard. She knew her daughter was a loony bin even then. This was school.

Later of course fell in love and married a Hindu. Even before gender test in the 5th month of pregnancy, I already had 10 names for girls and boys each. We had decided Peanut’s name by 8th month but kept it a secret.

I even suggest names to my cousins. ๐Ÿ˜†

    1. I embarrass Peanut with all sorts of nicknames. Chunnu, Munnu, tikku, Mattu…now she is used to it. Only when I take her full name, she knows that Mamma is mad. ๐Ÿ˜€

I call my brother Puchu. ๐Ÿ˜› Another goofy name that I gave him.

    2. Sols, thats what irks me….when ppl go to great lengths to decide the baby’s name, look at this lady, who is still in the deciding process – the child is already 2 years old… ๐Ÿ™„

Please suggest some name, so that I can tell her, when I meet her next…. ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. Seriously some parents are sooo soo dumb really. I know somebody called Titty….can u believe it TITTY & he’s a MAN. Sheesh how we used to cringe & at the same time grin when we called out his name but now we are sort of used to it ๐Ÿ˜€

But ur neighbour is the pits….I was comparing with her situation and remmeber how we were frantically trying to name the children as soon as possible so tht we could make their passports. I think we named both the kids within 1 week after they were born & mind u we chose a completely different name from the 100’s in our list :-S

    Nice post Uma!!!!!
    Enjoyed reading it :-)!!!!!!

    1. TITTY ?????? OMG !!!!! ๐Ÿ™„ And that too, for a man !!!! This is the limits !!!! Why do parents do this, to their children ?????

I named my girls, in the hospital itself, just after they were born, so that the hospital could make the birth certificate, immediately and give it to me !!! Super fast !!!! ๐Ÿ™‚

  7. I have met a few parents who are like your neighbour – they just can’t settle on a name! One’s excuse was that they were waiting to see what their child’s personality would be like – give me a break!

  9. I had a huge list of baby names from my friends for both the kids, some names become popular in one generation.. for a few years, all the kids born in 1991-1993 had names like Kanika, Kartik (there were five of them, all my kids friends), kartika and Kritika, Aayushi, Aarushi, Akanksha, Akhshat and Akshita. (lots of Ks)…

By the way I had also created email ids for my kids in 2001, but as they grew older they switched to gmail, and my efforts were wasted ๐Ÿ˜†

    1. Names with K, eh ??? When I was pregnant, I was so keen to name my kid with the starting letter S. And both my daughters’ names begin with S.

Absolutely true, this is what I wrote in my comment in Meira’s post – what ever email id you get for them, they’ll choose their own and the most imaginative name ever. My daughters too, have done that only. ๐Ÿ™‚
