Car or Bus ????

I need to go to Mylapore, for shopping. I’ll better leave early after breakfast, so that I can be back for lunch.

Ok, tell you what, I’ve a client meeting somewhere there and so, I can drop you at Mylapore.

Oh !!! No need. You just carry on with your office work. I can manage. I’ll take the train and you know, I love going by trains.

But, why do you need to travel by train, when I can drop you in our car ?????  Its OK, if you don’t want to come with me !!!!

🙄 🙄     But I want to go by train.

I am going to the library today. I need to return these books today, at any cost. It’s already past due date.

OK, get ready soon. I’ll drop you there while I go to office. Anyway, library is on the way.

Oh !!! Don’t you bother. I’ll manage on my own.

Its OK, if you don’t want to come with me !!!!

🙄 🙄   But I want to go by bus.

Oh, dear !!! How can I explain to this dear man of mine that I love to go with him in the car.  It’s not that I avoid the travel with him.  It’s actually a warm feeling inside the heart, when I travel in the car, sitting beside him, listening to our favourite old tamil hits.  Nothing can match this blissful travel with him.  But, still, me being me, I love the public transport system. What to do ???

Being born and brought up in Mylapore, somehow the crowds formed a major part of my life. It’s always filled with people wherever I go and I’ve got so used to it.  It’s such a comforting feeling that I am not alone in this world.  Whatever time I go out, I see people always running for something or other. Actually, its full of life.  People want to live their life to the fullest. They want to survive and they are fighting against everything to sustain themselves in this world. I like this. Actually, I love this life full of people.

And I’ve always used the public transport from a very young age.  I used to think that Autos are not safe – those were the days of Auto Shankar, who kidnapped girls and raped them, posing as an auto driver.

So, the buses have been my second home, where I spent most of my time – travelling.  And it is indeed such a pleasure to take the longest bus route and have a fav book to keep company.  The moving crowd, the constant bhak bhak, the little fights with the conductor for not giving proper change, are all so lively to watch and be a part of. And the book reading in-between all these hungama, is so much interesting.  These bus journeys have actually helped me to read a lot of books during my teenage and later.

I had missed going by buses, when I had two little girls along with me. Since I was unable to handle to both of them in a bus, where one will be running helter skelter and I might be going mad, I took to the auto.  But still my heart was with the buses.

Hyderabad proved a great challenge, where only Telugu name boards welcomed me everywhere. I just couldn’t make out where a bus is going. So, stuck with autos there too.

Back in Chennai, I am having a great time, travelling by the public transport, to my heart’s fill.  And the girls with me on these journeys, is so satisfying to my heart. And again, I am back to reading books during my travel time.  It’s just the feeling of being transported back to my teenage years and I am enjoying every moment of it.

This particular bus which I board to take my girls to their dance classes, actually goes till the Marina Beach. So, everyday I get to see the loads of people, who are on their way to their beach for an evening out there.  All the little boys and girls, all excited and totally dressed up for a wonderful evening in the beach – Oh, what wonderful days !!!!  Their mothers are constantly shouting at them to be together, but their non-stop chatter is more loud to hear what their mom is telling them. They are laughing without worries and I enjoy the whole scene in front of me.

So, all said and done, the public transport is still the favourite travel option for me.  And given a choice, I’ll choose it first.

But I might take to the luxury which my dear husband is offering, to see that smile on his face. 🙂

What about you ???? Do you take to the car or the bus ????

  1. Bus .. Bus… Bus… and yes I totally understand what you are saying… Somewhere I love public transport too.. travelling with people on those known and unknown roads helps me connect with the common masses. It somewhere sets in you a sense of parity and humility no matter where you are…While the Bombay trains awe me with the zeal of the people travelling in me, the Jodhpur transport used to humble me with the respect each one gives you in the city, the Kolkata transport again helps me connect to the culture that is still not urban despite so much modernisation and the b’lore traffic spoke just the opposite… the public transport helps you discover much more, than losing excess wight theough sweat… it helps you discover the city through a different pair of glasses altogether 🙂
(jumped over from nancy’s blog and glad I did) 😀

Very true – these public transports are the life of the city and helps us discover the true colours of the city.

Just love the way you have described abt the transport and ppl in different cities. Am yet to travel by bus anywhere else other than Chennai. 🙂

Sigh! I miss the public transport days too .. its nt so gud in Hyderabad!
Music and books used to keep me nice company all thru the journey from home to work 🙂 2.5 hrs seemed nt so long! Aah .. those days 😀

      2. Yes, Hyd public transport is not so welcoming to ppl to board it. Here, in Chennai, the buses are awesome – some are so spacious and with A/c you dont feel the travel at all.

Those journeys are a memory to hold on to, right ???? Me too think the same – 2.5 hrs didnt seem long at all.

  2. Well I love travel by the local trains 😀

It’s fun reading as you travel to work or to university. I’ve had my fair bit of it.

I do miss those fun days, for I drive to work now (that’s cause my workplace is real close by and I often pick groceries on my way home from work ).

But if given a choice I’d choose public transport for sure 😀 😀

I do agree with Solilo though 😉 😉

You agree with the Don !!! Oh, CB !!!! I am just trying to make a point that I love the travel in public transport !!! But, that doesnt tell that I hate cars. Its just a matter of preference.

If we are going out as a family, I’ll certainly use the car. Its family time. 🙂

I hate going by buses even for long distance travel. I would prefer going on my bike and once I get a car for myself, who knows, I might shift my preference to the car. But I just hate buses; especially the Tamil Nadu buses, I could run faster to reach my destination instead (You should sit in a Kerala bus to know what I am talking about 😀 )

    1. Oh, just keep quiet – always reading in-between the lines…just learn to take things as it is, not twisted around your neck.

OOPS, never travelled in Kerala in a bus….anyway, are u telling me that Chennai buses are slow ???? My God, thats so bad of you. These buses are actually known for their rash driving and high speeding. But the traffic on the road is just too much…cannot blame the bus being slow.

  7. I am a car person. Will take public transport if and only if I know I will not find parking for my car or bike. I love the independence associated with driving my own vehicle.

But all that aside, how could you say no to your dear hubby who just offered you a lift? If I did such a thing, my wife would jump and clung onto me and my car, and in the meantime also ask me to drive her to all other places that she wanted to go to! 😀

    1. You take public transport, when u know you wont get parking ???? WOW Masood. My S will avoid going to that place, if there is no parking. Howzaat ??? 😉

I too jump at such offerings, when I am too tired to travel by bus, but at times I prefer the public transport system. 🙂

  8. I was okay with buses till the day I was almost pushed under the wheel by people in a mad rush to get in, on one of my trips to the library while a college student. That put me off buses for a long long time. Instead I used to walk wherever I could. Now of course I cannot be bothered with buses. I take an auto, or drive myself or ask the L & M to drop me. 🙂

I recently went to Marina beach & Kabali kovil in Mylapore. I miss Chennai so much. I’d settle there if I could 😦 😦 😦

I love these flying trains much… No other transport can make me to reach so fast from central to anywhere in that line during peak time…
Now the quality of buses is really improved but the cost is high which is not affordable for every common man 😦

And trains are damn helpful to avoid the mad traffic jams…I agree…ppl shld use this more often and give their vehicles a break.

  18. Uma, I tell you! I hate buses in Chennai! Never. They were nightmares to me! Ofcourse I’ve travelled a great deal in buses while at college. If its with a group of friends around, and if the bus isn’t crowded, I like bu travelling. Uff I had only bad experiences travelling in crowded buses from Anna nagar to Redhills and in 41C.
Else, I am an Autowali. My mom always gives me an ugly stare when I call “Auto…inga poganum”! I do love travelling in electric trains. But out of all this, I simply love travelling in my own vehicle. It gives me freedom, a kind of profoundness and what not!
